RACI Matrix

Build a RACI matrix in your browser: tasks down the side, roles across the top, one letter per cell. Free, no sign-up.

Start from:
Task / deliverable

R Responsible – does the work · A Accountable – owns the result, one per task · C Consulted – gives input · I Informed – kept up to date

Tap a cell to cycle R → A → C → I → empty. Saved in this browser only.

How it works

  1. 1Step 1

    List tasks and roles

Start from the marketing campaign matrix below or clear it. Click any task or role to rename it, and add rows and columns as you need them.

  2. 2Step 2

    Mark R, A, C, I

Tap a cell to cycle Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed. The matrix flags every task that has no A, more than one A, or no R.

  3. 3Step 3

    Share it

Download the finished RACI matrix as Excel (.xlsx) or CSV, or print it to PDF for the project folder.

What a RACI matrix is, and how to read one

A RACI matrix is a grid that answers one question for every piece of work: who does what? Each row is a task or deliverable, each column is a person or role, and each cell holds R, A, C, I or nothing. R is Responsible: the person who does the work. A is Accountable: the one person who owns the result and signs it off. C is Consulted: someone whose input is needed before the work is done. I is Informed: someone who is told once it is done. Read a row from left to right to see who is involved in a task. Read a column from top to bottom to see everything one person is asked to do. A column with many Rs is overloaded; a column with only Is may not need to be on the matrix at all. The matrix on this page checks itself. If a row has no A, or two of them, it says so, because that is where decisions stall and work is done twice. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.

A small RACI matrix example

Take the task "Approve campaign budget" in a marketing team. The marketing director is A, because the budget is theirs to approve. The campaign manager is R, because they prepare the numbers. Finance is C, because they check them. The CEO is I, because they only need to know the outcome. One A, at least one R, a few Cs and Is: that is a healthy row. The marketing template on this page shows a full set of rows like this, ready to edit.

Rules for a RACI matrix that works

Give every task exactly one A. Make sure every task has at least one R; the A and the R can be the same person. Keep Consulted for people who really change the outcome, because every C is a conversation that costs time. Mark Informed only for people who need to act on or plan around the result. If a row is full of Cs and Is, the task is probably too big and should be split.

RACI matrix vs RACI chart vs responsibility matrix

These names usually describe the same thing. RACI chart, RACI matrix and responsibility assignment matrix all refer to the grid of tasks, roles and the four letters. Some teams add extra letters for sign-off or support, but the four-letter form is the one most people mean, and it is the one built here.

Keeping the matrix useful after the kickoff

A RACI matrix helps most when it is short enough to be read. Aim for the tasks that cause confusion, not every activity. Review it when the team changes or a project moves into a new phase, and export a fresh copy to Excel so everyone works from the same version.

Frequently asked questions

What does RACI stand for?

Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed. Responsible does the work, Accountable owns the result, Consulted gives input beforehand, Informed is told afterwards.

Is this RACI matrix maker free?

Yes. It is free, has no watermark and needs no account.

Can I export the RACI matrix to Excel?

Yes. Use Download Excel (.xlsx). You can also save CSV or print the matrix to PDF.

Can one task have two Accountable people?

It should not. A single A per task is the point of the matrix, and the tool warns you when a row has none or more than one.

Do I need an R if someone is already A?

Yes. Every task needs someone who does the work. If that person also owns the result, the task still has one A and one R; many teams then write A/R in the cell and keep the row valid.

Is my matrix saved on a server?

No. It stays in your browser on this device.
